5 Robotics Projects Kids Absolutely Love

Robotics is one of the most exciting ways to teach children engineering, programming, and creative thinking. Here are five projects that GoSTEAM students build — and obsess over.

Ask a child what they want to be when they grow up and "robot builder" might not top the list — yet. But put them in a room with motors, wheels, sensors, and code, and watch what happens. Something ignites.

At GoSTEAM, robotics is one of our most popular programs for a simple reason: children love making things that move. Here are five of the most beloved projects our Alpha Robotics students build.

1. The Line Follower Robot

This classic beginner project uses infrared sensors to detect a black line on a white surface and follows it automatically. Children learn about sensors, conditional logic (if the sensor detects black, turn left), and the satisfaction of watching their robot navigate a track they drew themselves.

Why kids love it: the moment their robot successfully completes the track for the first time is pure magic. We've seen children literally jump up and scream.

2. The Obstacle Avoidance Robot

Using an ultrasonic sensor (the robot's "eyes"), this robot detects objects in its path and steers around them. Children write the decision-making code that determines how far away an object must be before the robot changes direction.

Why kids love it: it's like their robot is alive. It reacts to the world. Children spend ages placing objects in its path just to watch it dodge them.

3. The Remote-Controlled Robot

This project introduces wireless communication. Children build a robot they can control via a phone or remote, then modify the control logic to add features — speed control, turbo mode, horn sounds.

Why kids love it: control. Children feel enormously powerful driving their own creation around the room.

4. The Maze Solver

More advanced students programme their robot to navigate a physical maze without human input, using a combination of distance sensing and movement algorithms. This introduces path-planning concepts that are directly related to how self-driving cars work.

Why kids love it: the intellectual challenge. When the robot solves the maze on its own, students feel like they've built something genuinely intelligent.

5. The End-of-Term Competition Robot

At the end of every Alpha Robotics term, students modify their robots for a friendly competition — obstacle course, fastest lap, or a robot "battle" where they try to push each other out of a ring.

Why kids love it: it's the culmination of everything they've built and learned. The competitive element brings out incredible motivation and creativity.
