In 2025, more than 4 billion people use the internet daily. Behind every app, website, game, and digital service is code — written by people who learned to think in logic, structure, and systems. And yet, in most Nigerian classrooms, coding is still treated as a specialist skill for university students.
That needs to change. Here's why.
Nigeria's Digital Economy is Booming
Nigeria's tech ecosystem is the largest in Africa. Lagos alone has over 400 registered tech startups. The federal government's economic diversification agenda puts digital skills at the centre. The Africa Digital Economy strategy estimates a $712 billion opportunity for the continent by 2050 — and Nigeria is positioned to claim a significant share.
But only if we have enough people who can build it.
Coding Teaches More Than Code
When a child learns to code, they don't just learn to type commands into a computer. They learn:
Problem decomposition — breaking a big, scary problem into small manageable steps
Logical thinking — understanding cause and effect, if-then reasoning
Persistence — debugging code teaches children that failure is just a step toward the solution
Creativity — code is a creative medium; children use it to make things that exist nowhere else in the world
These skills transfer directly to mathematics, science, writing, business — and to life.
The Earlier, the Better
Research consistently shows that children who are introduced to computational thinking before age 10 develop stronger mathematical reasoning and are more likely to pursue STEM careers. The brain's "critical period" for learning foundational frameworks — including logical and sequential thinking — is between ages 5 and 12.

The Global Benchmark
Countries like Estonia, Finland, and Singapore have made coding a compulsory part of their primary school curriculum. Their students consistently outperform the global average in mathematics and problem-solving. The UK added computing to its national curriculum in 2014. South Korea in 2018.
